Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong opens up about drug addiction

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has discussed his past troubles with drugs in a new interview.

The band release their new album ‘Revolution Radio’ on October 7. They have so far shared the album’s title track and lead single ‘Bang Bang’.

Armstrong entered rehab for substance abuse in September 2012 after an onstage meltdown at IHeartRadio Festival (see footage below).

Speaking to Q, Armstrong said of this period: “The thing about someone who’s losing their mind is that they don’t know they’re losing their mind. I thought my life was completely normal. And it wasn’t. I was on drugs! And people aren’t acting rationally when they’re on drugs. So I had to take care of myself. I had to kick that, and I did. Then we took a long break which was totally necessary.”

Armstrong also admitted that the trilogy of albums his band released that year – ‘¡Uno!’, ‘¡Dos!’ and ‘¡Tré!’ – “have absolutely no direction to them”. He explained: “It was about being prolific for the sake of it”.

Meanwhile, Armstrong stars in a new film called Ordinary World. Watch the trailer here.

In the movie, Armstrong plays the part of Perry, “an aging former punk rocker who’s now a married father of two”. It also stars Judy Greer, Selma Blair, Dallas Roberts, Fred Armisen, Brian Baumgartner and Kevin Corrigan. Lee Kirk directs.
